DETROIT, September 5, 2008 - Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, a downtown Detroit business resident for nearly 70 years, will illuminate its 21-story office tower tonight with a 12-story, red heart light display on the south side, and 'D' towering nine stories in white lights on the north side. The lights will become visible at dusk this evening.
"Blue Cross loves Detroit, and we are committed to a bright future for the city, region and state," said Daniel J. Loepp, BCBSM President & CEO, who was born in Detroit and raised in the city's east side neighborhoods. "Detroit is one of America's great communities and, as such, can overcome any challenge. Lighting our building symbolizes the feelings of Blue Cross and our employees toward Detroit, its people and its future."
BCBSM illuminates its headquarters at 600 E. Lafayette regularly to recognize various honorary and special events. The red heart is lit each February to recognize American Heart Month and encourage prevention of heart disease, the single greatest cause of death in the United States. In 2006, BCBSM unveiled the 'D' tribute to honor the Detroit Tigers' first World Series appearance since 1984.
The building will remain lit in symbolic tribute to Detroit's promising future until October, when the company's annual "Pink Ribbon" tribute to Breast Cancer Awareness Month goes up in lights.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is a nonprofit corporation and an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
