Traveling with U-M premier care
No matter where you go, you are covered for emergency care. Be sure to always carry your U-M Premier Care card.
Below is a summary of how to travel with U-M Premier Care coverage in Michigan, across the United States and the world.
In Michigan where U-M Premier Care Provider Network 1 is available
- Emergency care – Call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room if the symptoms are severe enough that someone with average health knowledge believes that immediate medical attention is needed.
- Urgent care – Call your PCP or Customer Service. Either can help you locate a participating urgent care center if your condition requires a medical evaluation within 48 hours. Call toll-free at 800-658-8878. TTY users call 800-649-3777.
- Routine or follow-up care – Contact your PCP who will coordinate your care.
In Michigan where U-M Premier Care Provider Network 1 is not available
- Emergency care – Call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. Refer to the service area map on the back cover for areas where U-M Premier Care is not offered.
- Urgent care – Call your PCP or Customer Service. Either can help you locate a participating urgent care center if your condition requires a medical evaluation within 48 hours. Call toll-free at 800-658-8878. TTY users call 800-649-3777.
- Routine and follow-up care – Contact your PCP for a referral to a provider in the travel area. Note that Network 2 benefits apply if your referral is to a U-M Premier Care Network 2 provider.
Covered dependents temporarily living away from home (such as college students) can register for out-of-area coverage by calling Customer Service at 800-658-8878 or 800-649-3777 (TTY for the hearing impaired).
GradCare members on assignment outside of the coverage area must register with their department.
In the United States outside of Michigan
- Emergency care – Call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
- Urgent care – Call BlueCard® at 800-810-BLUE (2583). This number is on the back of your ID card.
- Routine care – Covered dependents temporarily living away from home (such as college students) can register for out-of-area coverage by calling Customer Service at 800-658-8878 or 800-649-3777 (TTY for the hearing impaired).
GradCare members on assignment outside of the coverage area must register with their department.
Outside the United States
- Emergency care – Go to the nearest hospital emergency room if the symptoms are severe enough that someone with average health knowledge believes that immediate medical attention is needed. You may be required to pay for services and then seek reimbursement.
