Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery®

Our Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery program was established in 2006 to help members make more informed decisions in selecting a quality hospital for bariatric surgery.

All referrals for bariatric surgery require clinical review and approval by BCN. Selecting a hospital with a Blue Distinction designation is not required.

Medicare Note: People who receive health benefits through Medicare may only undergo bariatric surgery at a facility approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. For a complete list of hospitals approved by CMS, please visit the CMS Web site.

BCN Advantage HMOSM members must select a CMS-approved facility that is also part of the BCN Advantage network.

A list of hospitals currently designated as Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery is available using the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association Blue Distinction Center Finder.

Please note that Blue Distinction Center designations are subject to change. For more information about the Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery, please visit the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association Web site.

Designation as Blue Distinction Centers means these facilities met objective criteria established in collaboration with expert clinicians’ and leading professional organizations’ recommendations. Individual outcomes may vary.
