A strong statewide provider network
A managed care program cannot succeed without a comprehensive provider network. Our network gives members a choice of conveniently located doctors who provide cost-effective services.
Our extensive network includes more than 4,800 primary care physicians — family doctors, internists and pediatricians — more than 14,000 specialists and most of the state's leading hospitals. Members also have access to care nationwide when traveling.
BCN Advantage has a network with 80 hospitals and more than 3,000 PCPs and more than 8,500 specialists in its 31-county service area.
The number of Blue Care Network physicians members can access is growing.
In East Michigan, BCN’s network expanded to include:
- In Huron County, 12 primary care physicians and 53 specialists.
- In Sanilac County, seven PCPs and 61 specialists.
- In St. Clair, BCN expanded from partial to full coverage of the county. The network includes 76 PCPs and 445 specialists.
In West Michigan, BCN’s network expanded:
- In Lake County to include one primary care physician and 10 specialists.
- In Manistee County, from partial to full coverage, to include 13 PCPs and 33 specialists.
Choose a primary care physician to manage your care
One way to hold down costs is for members select a PCP who coordinates most medical care from routine physicals to hospitalization. This ensures members the opportunity to receive the best possible care while avoiding unnecessary services. If a member needs to see a specialist, the PCP will provide a referral. Coordinated treatment by a PCP is the key to effective and efficient health care.
- Members may select a PCP at MiBCN.com, by calling our Customer Service department or by completing the enrollment form. Each family member may choose a different PCP from within the BCN network.
- Female BCN members can see network gynecologists or obstetricians for Pap smears, annual visits and obstetrical care without a referral as part of the Women's Choice program.
- Benefits the member obtains on his or her own are not likely to be covered unless the member is covered by the Blue Elect Self-Referral Option plan.
User-friendly referrals help members and physicians
We've eliminated the paperwork and made referrals easier in the Mid and West Michigan regions. These members don't have to wait for a letter from BCN before seeing a specialist, and PCPs no longer have to submit routine referrals. We continue to monitor care and cost by tracking electronic referrals and other reports that tell us what kind of care the member needs and where it will be provided.
