Blue Care Network makes sure prescription drugs provide quality treatment at the best cost, by:
- Screening prescriptions that put members at risk
- Multiple medications prescribed for the same member that might interact badly
- Drugs with known risks for members age 65 or older
- NSAIDS (anti-inflammatory drugs) prescribed for members who are at risk of gastrointestinal bleeding
- Potential abuse of controlled substances
- Medications for members with congestive heart failure that might worsen their condition
- Maintaining an independent formulary that identifies effective medications at the lowest net cost
- Encouraging the use of generic drugs through education and benefit designs.
Prior Authorization/Step Therapy Program
Our prior authorization program promotes safe, cost-effective medications by promoting lower-cost formulary alternatives that have proven histories of medical effectiveness.
Our step therapy program requires members to try less expensive or less risky medications before the prescribed drug is given.
