Community health initiatives

Blue Care Network of Michigan and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan work together to improve the health of Michigan residents. We envision a state where all residents, including children and seniors, enjoy the best health possible along with affordable, quality health care when they need it. Our social mission includes four key community health initiatives:

Access to Health Care — The Blues help ensure appropriate distribution of health services for all Michigan residents.

Depression Awareness and Treatment — To help create more awareness about the effects of and treatment for depression, we created programs for physicians, seniors and adolescents. The Blues depression programs aim to reduce the stigma of depression and to encourage screening for the disease, especially among teens and the elderly.

Domestic Violence and Abuse Prevention — Our domestic violence programs educate and empower schools and health care providers to launch efforts to raise awareness and lower occurrence of domestic violence. Initiatives include middle and high school classroom presentations and training for doctors and other health care professionals — all provided at no cost by the Blues.

Physical Activity and Nutrition — Programs focus on promoting partnerships with various community and government groups to increase physical activity, particularly among youth and seniors. We are working with schools, area agencies on aging and other organizations statewide to increase awareness and participation in healthy lifestyles.
